FAQ

What are the benefits of sharing storage?

You can save time and money. Improve your company workflow by speeding things up dramatically, no need to wait for things to copy, no need for wasteful duplicate files. One place to search means you find what you are looking for straight away, and one central drive means easy backup and data management.

Why is Space safer than using single drives?

Although modern hard drives have great reliability, they still have moving parts that wear. So it’s not a matter of if they will fail, it is a matter of when they will fail. So, in addition to loosing your data through dropping, losing, or corrupting a drive.
If you have your data spread across ten individual drives then it is ten times more likely that you will lose some of your data through a drive failure as you have ten possible points of failure.
However, Space overcomes this by using RAID 6 protection which uses multiple drives to protect data. In addition to RAID 6 technology spreading data across a number of drives to combine their performance, it also adds additional data so that if one or even two drives fail the original data is preserved. This means that when ten drives are used with RAID 6 technology to store data it offers one thousand times more protection against losing data through a drive failure compared to using the same ten drives individually.
This reliability is further enhanced by Space being able to back itself up to another Space unit either on site, at another site, or our data centre. This feature makes 'Disaster Recovery' available to content creation professionals which is a commonly used procedure in the finance and legal business sectors.

Why do I need Space?

We are in a digital era of high quality images with large data requirements. However, by replacing film and tape we are losing the ability to store our images on a reliable and stable medium. Many now store their irreplaceable digital images on individual disk drives that contain moving parts which wear and will eventually fail. The best way to overcome this is to use a RAID protected device such as Space to protect your data. Space uses RAID 6 technology to offer vastly better
data protection than a single disk.

In addition to offering fantastic data protection, Space also offers fantastic performance. Unlike most typical servers, Space's performance has been optimised for content creation applications, and this optimisation is one of SPACE's real strengths.
It enables users to store and work on their images directly on Space centralised shared storage, safe in the knowledge that their data is stored reliably on a system that will give a predictable and sustained high performance. By providing high performance centralised storage, Space also allows for other workstation local storage to be replaced, and improves workflow efficiency. Often where data is stored on individual drives, these drives do not offer enough performance to allow the images to be worked on in realtime. Where this is the case, workstations will have fast local storage, and images are transferred between fast local storage and
individual drives.

By having the performance to support real time work, Space can be used to replace both individual drives and workstation local fast storage. This allows improvement in workflow efficiency as all users can access and work on the same images. No longer will users have to wait while copying images between devices, or wait for a drive to become available. Any change made by one user on Space storage is immediately available to another user. This enables work to be completed faster, and allow users to collaborate on projects in real time. However, all this functionality does not come at a high price. When you consider the total cost of the storage Space will replace, the maintenance of that replaced storage, lost time due to a drive failures, and the improvement in efficiency Space will bring to your workflow. You will find that you can easily justify Space while getting something safer and more useful for your business.
